Ask anyone about the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), and they will probably think of single cask whiskies bottled at cask strength. But few people know that in its early years, the Society also released a series of whisky-based liqueurs.
■ Drambuie × Macallan × SMWS
SMWS Liqueur 24 was produced by The Drambuie Liqueur Co. Ltd., using Macallan as its base whisky, and was bottled by the SMWS. That is three famous Scottish names in one bottle.
■ Understanding the SMWS Number Code
SMWS bottles do not show the distillery's name. Instead, they use a number code. For single cask whiskies, the number before the dot is the distillery code, and the number after the dot shows which cask from that distillery the Society has released.
In this system, "24" is the code for Macallan – a nice link to both the name of this liqueur and its base whisky.
